Troubleshooting PowerPoint

Every time I try to use the Slide Design or Slide Layout features I have a
problem. The side bar on the right opens like it's supposed to, but I cannot
see any of the layouts or designs. I think it's supposed to be displaying
thumbnails, but I can't see them and don't understand what's wrong. This
seriously slows me down when designing presenations because I have to apply
the design or layout to see what it will look like. Is there any way I can
fix this?

Hi this is getting to be a regular problem but there isnt a clear cause as yet.

For some not having Outlook open helps and also clearing temp files. There's
a very full account here
