How do a take a .bmp file of my logo (a simple graphic that resembles a
letter M) and turn it into a symbol that I can insert into text? Thanks for
any help.

You could insert the image itself - save as an autotext when you have
adjusted the size and layout.

Insert the bitmap on to the page. Right click and set properties > layout to
'in line with text' should it be anything different.
You can set the size from the properties dialog, or you can drag one of the
corner 'handles' to reduce the size. When you have it as you want, ALT+F3
and give it a name eg logo. You can then insert it at the cursor with insert
autotext or type logo and press F3.
