Type period and get period and comma

When preparing a new message, I type a period and a period followed by a
comma appears. Also, when I type a comma a comma and a period appears. How
do I fix this?

What message type are you using?
What encoding are you using?

Any other relevant information that you know, but we don't, e.g. your
