Unable to access registry key during 07 beta installation

I was most of the way through installing Office 2007 beta 2, and it failed
with an error along the lines of "The registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.tif cannot be accessed." I am logged in
as Owner, the only account that has ever been used on this computer. I have
BitDefender and Windows Defender running for antivirus/antispyware. I did not
have anything else running except wordpad. Any ideas how to get past this?
Thanks!

It's possible that one of the apps you're running is locking or blocking access to the registry keys that need to be updated.

Try shutting down all of your running apps, utilities, antivirus et al software and see if the install works.

Yeah, I considered this. The only program I really had running on my second
try was Windows Defender, and a few other processes that should not have
interfered. Two things:
1) .tif is currently registered to Photoshop. Is that a problem?
2) will running the installation while in safe mode work/help?

Here is my exact error:

Alright, I tried going into my registry and giving the .tif key folder all
the permissions for all of the groups/users I could think of (SYSTEM, Owner,
Administrator, Creator Owner). This actually got the installer past the key
in question, but then upon another installation attempt it had the same error
at a .tiff key. How can I avoid having to go to each key it stumbles at
(which takes a good 20 minutes to find out and roll back) and adding all of
those permissions? At the very least, which of those users do I actually have
to give permissions to? There must be a better way...
