Unable to either modify or remove my Office Pro 3003 installation

I

Ira Blumenthal

In the past I was unable to either modify or remove my Office Pro 3003
installation (My OS is Win XP Pro) because I had mistakenly deleted the
MSOCache directory. To clear this problem I had to use Windows Install
Cleanup to remove Office from the installed products list and then reinstall
Office from scratch. While this is not difficult it is a pain mainly because
I also had to download and install all the updates; this takes quite a
while.

Now, once again, I cannot either modify or install office even though my
MSOCache directory is intact. The PRO11N.MSI is in a directory named,
90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9. When I run it, it produces the error
message, "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify
that the source exists and you can access it." The directory contains a
large number of .CAB files which I thought was the source.

I found the Local Installation Source tool (LISTool.exe) on the MS website.
It is supposed to enables local installation source. I ran LISTool.exe. It
accessed my original Office CD and said the source was now available.
However, running PRO11N.MSI still produced the same error message.

I decided to try something else. I renamed the
90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9 directory. Then I ran LISTool.exe
again. It made a new directory, 90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9, and
placed a new copy of PRO11N.MSI in the directory along with many .CAB files.
However, once again running PRO11N.MSI, from the new directory produces the
same error message above. I also tried running SETUP.EXE from my original
Office 2003 CD. The same error message above appeared again.

Since all the .CAB files are in the directory, I suspect the source exists
but I can't seem to access it. I have no idea why. Can anybody help me with
this?
