unable to edit, save or create documents in office 2003 prof

I have installed Office 2003 Professional onto my new pc running windows XP
home with an Athlon 64 processor. This worked great for roughly 3 weeks. I am
now unable to edit documents in any of the Office applications, and unable to
create new documents. I can only view and print documents in any application.

I have installed all available updates, reinstalled the software completely,
performed a full virus and spyware scan but with no improvement.

Any ideas would be very well received. Maybe office 2003 doesn't work on 64
bit machines....?

Pretty sure that I activated it, but certainly can't check that now; clicking
'activate product' doesn't even bring up the dialogue box to say the product
is or isn't already activated.
