Unalphabetical Roster

Lisa

Hello,

I'm trying to create a database that keeps a roster of employees. the
problem is, the report that acts as a directory will not be alphabetical. It
needs to be sorted by department, then a hierarchy within that department.
I've tried numbering each department, then numbering each job within that
department and sorting it that way. Unfortunately, that is not a practical
way to keep the database updated. As people move in and out and jobs are
created and deleted, it is difficult for the data entry person to know the
convoluted numbering system. Has anyone tackled this problem before? I will
also be trying to do an Org chart with this data.
Thanks,
Lisa

Lisa,
The sorting of your report's records is done through the Sorting and
Grouping dialog box. The sorting in your query behind the report does not
come into play.

A normal directory report should be grouped by Department (ascending)
and Employee (ascending)

If you're saying that in your directory, the Departments are NOT
supposed be in alphabetical order, and... your Employees are not supposed to
be in alphabetical order, then some type of numbering/sorting scheme is the
only way out.

I built a snowplowing application, where the user assigns numbers to
each customer (using something like the Dewey decimal system), so that the
customers list is in the correct "plowing" order... for the driver to
follow.
