Unlinking text boxes

Publisher 2003, Windows XP.
I have received a 43 page document that has all the pages linked, with text
autoflowing from page to page. I've tried to unlink the text boxes so that I
can insert pages and make revisions without affecting every page that follows.

When I do unlink the text boxes at the beginning of the document I lose all
text on the following pages. Only the clipart remains. What am I missing?
I assumed that unlinking would simply take off the autoflow from page to page?

Have you tried just inserting the pages you need without unlinking the text
boxes?

Unlinking the text boxes does remove the text flow. That means that text
from box number n no longer flows into box number (n + 1), and is all in the
overflow area of box n, hence the blank text boxes.

A solution is to first go to the beginning of box (n + 1), Ctrl+Shift+End
(select to end of story), Ctrl+X (cut), then break the link, and click back
into box (n + 1) and Ctrl+V (Paste).

Thanks Ed. I understand what you are saying about the text being in the
overflw area of box n. But in trying your solution, I do the Select to end
of story, cut, break the link and then the text from n+2 comes into the box
where n+1 was. Then when I paste back into that box, it says do I want to
use overflow and I say NO or else I'll just be back to where I started.

However the text that was in n+2 is now in the overflow. Do I need to
insert a new page for that text to get manually cut and paste from the
overflow to?"

I did try inserting pages without unlinking. But then when I added 1/2 pg
of text and tried to paste the text from the following linked box to come
after the 1/2 page of text, it completely ignored that box and pasted onto
the page before the inserted page.

Grrr!

Have you tried just inserting the pages you need without unlinking the text

Can you not add a linked text box on a new page at the end of your document and
do your editing where needed? Or if that isn't possible, shorten a linked text
box and create a new text box above or below; adding the new page at the end.

The functionality of linking text boxes is great. However, my problem is
slightly different and explaind below.

I am creating a brochure with several sections which are not linked. The
individual sections are
linked within themselves.

The brochure has been developed thus far with a lengthy first section of
about 13 pages. That is, one quarter of a folded duplex sheet. That
section is followed by two additional sections. There is no interlinking
between the sections. Total pages so far is 20.

The first section needs additional pages. Using the insert pages menu,
inserts 4 pages after page 13. I doubt that the entire four pages will be
needed. I don't want blank pages in the "middle" of the brochure. How do
I move the blank pages to the end, assuming there will be three? Is that
where they should go?

The text from n+2 onwards should be on the clipboard, not in the n+1st text
box.

You paste back into the text box from which you cut, which should now be
empty as it has no link flowing into it. It should be the first box in a
second chain.

Thanks Mary. That worked for this particular document. I added several
pages at the end and then was able to insert the text where I needed and the
rest overflowed to the linked boxes at the end.

You saved me from my frustration. Thanks so much!

Ed... I will try this when I get home. I'm at worked and used Mary's
solution of adding linked text boxes at the end. That solved it for this
document.

But I still want to try it the way you describe when I get home because
I'll likely need to do this in the future. Thanks for your patience.

Publisher will ask about four, but you don't have to insert four. Type one in
the insert page dialogue, Tell Publisher "no"... Add the other three at the end.
