unprotect option and lost password

I received a document that appears to be protected, I
can't turn off the 'track changes' tags.

The sender claims not to have a password associated with
the document. They have had others complain of the same
thing, but they are at a loss.

How can I get the track changes tags to be accepted and
clean up the document?
Thanks

Could you describe what you're experiencing in a bit more
detail? You mention password, but don't say if you're
actually being prompted to type in a password.

What do you see when you look in the Tools menu? Do you see
"Unprotect document" or "Protect document"?

Please describe what you mean with "track changes" tags?
And these appear in the document when you open it? And when
you edit it?

In which version of Word was the document created? And
which version of Word do you have? Was Outlook used to send
the document?
