"unread contacts": How do I get rid of the number which shows up .

There's two possible numbers which show up next to your Contacts, the total
number or "unread" number of contacts. How do you "read" or open these
contacts? I have clicked on contacts which I know are new, which presumably
would bring this number of unread contacts down as I "read" them but that
number remains the same. I have 194 total and 37 unread. Does anyone know
anything about this?
