unscheduled overtime

Using Pro2002 w/ Project Server. My enterprise calendars
are defined and I am running into the problem from the
real world. How do I account for individuals staying late
to finish some tasks if the scheduled work time did not
originally accounted for overtime in the enterprise
calendar?

Assuming you are using Project Web Access to collect actuals from your team
members, you have a couple of choices on how to address overtime work:

One option is to ask your team members to display the Actual Overtime Work
field in their Tasks page in the timesheet, and to enter the number of hours
above 8 hours each day in the timesheet to account for their overtime work.
This assumes that you are using the "Hours of work done per time period"
method of tracking actuals, with the default time period set to Days.

If you are using the Actual Work Done and Work Remaining method of tracking
actuals, you can add the Actual Overtime Work column to your team members'
timesheets by clicking Tools - Customize - Published Fields... In the
Published Fields dialog box, select the Actual Overtime Work field on the
left and copy it to the right. Make sure the "Let resource change field"
option is selected for this field, and then click OK. You will also need to
republish the project by clicking Collaborate - Publish - Republish All, and
then click OK. Your people will be able to enter the number of hours of
overtime work they have actually performed.

The values entered in the Actual Overtime Work field in PWA will be pushed
into the appropriate project plan when the actuals are updated by the
project manager. These values can be viewed by adding the Actual Overtime
Work column to any task table, or by applying either the Task Usage or
Resource Usage view, and then by adding the Actual Overtime Work details to
the timephased grid (yellow/white timesheet on the right).

Would either of these approaches work for you? Let me know.
