unselecting cells

This sounds stupid, but sometimes when I double-click a
cell, and see the formula in that cell, I can't make it go
back to the results. If I click in another cell, it adds
that second cell's address to the first cell. If I click
outside the border of the worksheet, it does nothing. I
hit ENTER and that does nothing. I double-click in the
first cell - nothing. I can't even always close the
workbook! Help!

This feels like something REALLY basic I've missed in my
self training.....
