Update 11.3.8 to MS Office 2004 problem

Just tried update 11.3.8 for Office 2004 on my powerbook. I received
some message which led me to check that "Office 2004/
Office/"Microsoft Component Plugin" was indeed version 11.3.7 (which
it is).
Second attempted update followed (I quote the response verbatim)
generated the following error message:
"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software
required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with
this installer to determine if your software meets the requirements
for this update."

I am using the automatic update feature and don't see any "Read Me"
file. Also, I don't have my original installation disk with me
because I am travelling, but don't see why that might be a problem.
Otherwise my log file shows successful prior updates from 11.2.0
through 11.3.7.
Anyone have ideas, suggestions about what might have gone wrong.

Don't know what might have gone wrong, but I would download each of the
11.3.5, 11.3.6, 11.3.7 and 11.3.8 updaters from Mactopia

http://microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

and reapply them.

Actually, if I were you, I'd wait until I got back. I think that the
11.3.8 update only fixes a vulnerability in Word to certain malicious
code inserted into a file. While the exploit has (according to Symantec)
been seen in the wild, it only causes Word to crash when the file is
opened - it doesn't allow remote access to your machine, or delete
files, etc.

Sorry for the double posting. When I checked on Saturday morning my
original posting did not appear (though I had received an email), so I
edited and posted again.
Thank you for your suggestions. I am now home, all updates 11.3.5
through 11.3.8 give the same error message. My component plugin is
version 11.3.7
Remain baffled, but would appreciate any further insights or
suggestions anyone might have. Suspect that 11.3.8 update is not
important to be, but don't want to be prevented from installing 11.3.9
(should it be released in the future). I am using OS 10.4.10 on a G4
powerbook and the student version of Office 2004.
Thanks
