update links to powerpoint without opening files

I have a PP presentation with links to three Excel files. When I open it and
choose "update links", it seems to open the excel file and close it for every
link - even though many are all in the same excel file. The only solution
seems to be opening all the linked Excel files before updating the links in
PP. Is this unavoidable?
