I have Microsoft Works 8 (I believe) preinstalled on my new computer, plus a
dorky little trial version of Office. Am I eligible to get the Office 2003
Upgrade (preferably professional ed.)

No, you need to purchase a "Full Version" of Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Works is apparently not a qualifying product for the Office XP Upgrade.
Neither is a Trial version of Office since you did not pay for it.
