using internet as a backup method?

I am thinking of using the internet as a backup method as I have just lost a
lot of files 10000's and more

I would like to know if I use webspace and store my files online can a web
crawler or importing software get my files,

none of the files will be linked or have an index file on the webpage, so I
believe that I could do this safely, but need it to be confirmed.

I have had too many problems in the past and need to find some other way to
backup, costs toooooo much in cdr's a cdrw's disks

I know that there are places on the net for this sort of thing, but need a
cheaper way, I have one, but need to know if the web crawlers or importing
tools will get them.

I have a lot of family photos and letters that need to be safe.

thank you in advance

Presuming your host supports subwebs and unique permissions, make it a password protected subweb so the spider can't get into it
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825451
Your host will have to support subwebs and unique permissions under the FP Server Extensions

- hopefully your host backs up periodically incase of a crash at their end

The short answer is Yes, if you have enough web space, if the T&C for your
web-space permits this usage, if you trust your host not to crash the
server, if your host doesn't disappear, if your host makes regular, frequent
backups of your web space. (I know of a host who crashed the server, and
backups were a month old.)

If you have to change your host - can you easily transfer the data?

As far as security goes, if the location is not known or publicised the
files should be safe. Web crawlers will only crawl what they know about or
link to.

A far better method of backup is, IMO, an external (USB or firewire) hard
disc (or two for additional security). Much cheaper (over time) than CDR
and much, much faster than CDRW.

Hi,

Consider installing a second HD, you can purchase a 100 - 200gb < $175, then using Norton Ghost or Drive Image you can backup your
entire HD onto the second HD. The assumption is that one but not both drives in the system may fail.

This is a very inexpensive and very fast.

reason i ask is that i have just had a hard drive fail in that it is not
being seen as a FATS32 filing system and not what is was, a NTFS filing
system!!!

i have using another hard drive in my pc to check for errors and viruses for
a friend and when i put my own hard drive back in my pc it saw it as FATS32
and i did not know what was going on until it showed the desktop and tried
to load outlook express that it kicked up a fuss that the folders were
missing, i had moved my outlook express folder to this drive that had been
somehow changed, just in case the boot drive failed i would still have my
emails, well now i have none!!

now i have a hard drive partition that was 39 gig and now is only seen as a
1.99gig partition with only 299mb free space the files (10000 of them are
called 'file0000.chk, file0001.chk.......file9999.chk) all of which are in a
folder called 'FOUND.000' this folder is in the root of the 'G' drive
partition

the rest of the hard drive which has 3 partitions are all ok, i hope.!!!

hope someone else can help me get back my emails and other files that
were/are still, on the drive.

thanks

Google for Ranish partition manager.
It can restore your partition.
( no guarantees though )

i have downloaded this and would like to know first off, will this change
just the partition only that has been changes of will it change all the
partitions on the hard drive?

the other two partitions are working ok, i just need to change the end

i have read the instructions but still none the wiser, not very good with
command line stuff

as long as my other partitions are safe as they are on the same hard drive,
then i am happy to use this
if your not sure that it won't change the other partitions then i have to
leave it.

Both Ghost and Drive Image are garbage.Whatever Symantec
touches turns to sh!t. I was shocked that Symantec actually provides
a refund which I just took advantage of this week by sending back
Drive Image.

Check out True Image from Acronis [1] and use additional hard
drives for storage.

clintonG,

I don't agree with your assessment of Ghost or Drive Image, however I purchased Acronis because I needed a method to save our test
system disk images to a remote via the network. DI requires that the systems have 256 mb memory yet some of our test system only
have 128 to test low memory conditions.

I can truly say that Acronis 8.0 is my new recommended backup solution. Thanks for bring it my attention.

This one is cheaper than any hosting service i have found :
www.remostorage.com

However as a regular internet backup user, the main drawback i see
with this technique is that uploads take a very long time when storing
large amounts of data.
