I'm distributing a PPT file to thousands of poeple who will all have
different versions of PPT, what is the best version of PPT to use? there are
no transitions or aniamtions?
Last year we saved it in 97 and if the end user had 2003 and didn't update
there PPT with a patch, it wouln't open the file.

Realistically, if you have no transitions and no animations, you don't have
to do any special version saving, JUST SAVE IT. PowerPoint 97 should be
able to open and run any file created in PowerPoint 2003. It is when you
get to the animations/transitions that there is a problem.

Another possibility is to distribute the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer along with
your file (assuming it is on a CD) so even those without PowerPoint can
still view it. This link provides more info:

If you have no transitions or animations I would export the slides as images
and use them to build a video (PhotoStory does an excellent job) for
distribution. You'll cover a lot more of the machines that haven't had PPT
updated.
