very interesting hyperlink issue

B

Ben

My major difficulty is as follows..

When building my web page with Frontpage 2003, the hyperlinks that link to
an external web page work ok, but all links that link to an existing file
they do not work. However, the existing file hyperlinks WILL WORK in the
Design window when holding 'ctrl'.

How is this possible?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Ben

Dear Ben,

When moving a site from your local computer to your hosting server,
there can be errors in how the links are written/rewritten. In many
cases, your links (look in the 'Code' view of FrontPage to check) will
look like:

<a href="C:\Documents and Settings\Ben\My Documents\My
Webs\website\file.htm">

....instead of <a href="http://example.com/file.htm">

....which is an ABSOLUTE link, available from where ever you place it
or...

<a href="file.htm">

....which is a RELATIVE link, and refers to the file's position from the
file that it is linked with.

Obviously, the Internet has no idea where C:\Documents and
Settings\Ben\My Documents\My Webs\website\file.htm is; only your
computer, and therefore FrontPage installed on it, can know that.

Look at the offending, published page in simple code view (File -> View
Source... or it's equivalent) on your favorite browser, and see if this
isn't the case. Good luck in your error-checking, Ben.
