Video Doesn't play in PowerPoint

I have a new Toshiba Laptop running XP Home edition, and I cannot get avi
videos to play in PowerPoint... (These videos play fine on my other
computer, so I believe it may be a problem with mplayer...?)

The place where the video is just turns white and does not play...

Do I need to reinstall windows?

I am leaving tomorrow for a presentation in Poland, and I MUST get these
videos to play...

Any suggestions?

What Echo Said.... as the videos showing as a white box is quite often an indication of the path/folder length being
tooooo long
