Warning message when opening Word document

Windows XPPro - Outlook 2002 - Word 97.

When opening a word document, or a word document attachment in outlook (by
dbl clicking or using open), I frequently
get a message saying that I already have this document open. This is also
indicated by the suffix 2 after doc name ie ABC.doc opens as ABC2.doc.
Checking the folder where the file is located shows only 1 copy
(ABC.doc) and no temporary files . Any ideas appreciated
