The watermark option is grayed out. when I click on it anyway, I get this
feature disabled because it is not compatible with microsoft word 97. How do
I turn off that compatiblity check?

You can still insert a watermark, and I'm surprised Word doesn't let you do
it via Format | Background | Printed Watermark, since the watermark thus
inserted is in no way incompatible with Word 97, even though Word 97 doesn't
have that specific feature. For information on inserting a watermark
manually, see “HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Word 97 and in Microsoft Word
2000†at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324

Thanks for the feedback. I found the soultion myself. It is in the Tools -
Options - SAVE tab. You can enable or disable features introduced after a
selected earlier version of Word. In this case, the way Word creates and
uses Watermarks was changed after Word 97. Since this was the default and
the feature was turned on, anything I tried to do with features that did not
exist in Word 97, or were changed from the way Word 97 used them, were
ignored or not possible.

I turned off that flag and everyting works fine.

Thanks again.

Ah, I assumed that you had enabled that option intentionally--didn't realize
you were unaware of it.
