WBS Code set to unordered Character

I am trying to get the top level of the WBS to be a "S". I have set it as a
unordered character, but the WBS column shows a "1". The rest of the levels
are ordered numbers.

The preview of the code shows *.1.1.1.1.

I have defined the character as an S, and the preview shows S.1.1.1.1, but
the WBS column still shows a 1.1.1.1.1 sequence.

Thanks in advance

You wrote "I have defined the character as an S." That suggests that you
have entered "S" in the Project Code Prefix box. If so, then you should set
ALL outline levels to Numbers (ordered). This will give you:

S1
S1.1
S2
etc

Note that there is not a dot between the S and the first number.

If you want a dot after the "S" then you should set the first outline level
as you said you did, but DO NOT enter anything in the Project Code Prefix
box. Also, you should UNcheck the "Verify uniqueness of new WBS codes" box.
Then, directly type the letter S into the WBS field for all top-level tasks.

Reid,

I didn't enter the S in the prefix box. I did figure out what went wrong,
however. I followed the instructions for displaying WBS in the help file,
and it tells you to use the "outline number" field in field name. When I
changed it to "WBS", it worked fine.

Put this one down to operator error, thanks for the help.
