WBS - automatically renumber?

K

kinetix

I'm spending almost all of my time working in a schedule (with +/- 250
lines) that was first setup by someone else and when I insert new task
or move existing ones around, project doesn't automatically adjust th
WBS the number so that it matches the sequence of the tasks. So afte
I've put tasks into the order that I want them, I have to edit the WB
so they are in order.

However, I noticed that on a schedule that I recently created fro
scratch, the WBS numbers do renumber when I move or add tasks. Keep i
mind that I'm referring to what I call the "terminal digits", th
numbers after the last decimal. If I move a task under a differen
summary task, Project corrects the number up to the last decimal point.

So I'm trying to figure out if there is a setting that I can change.

thanks,

Dou

WBS (field: WBS) value is controlled by WBS code definition set via
Select Project | WBS | Define Code ... option.

By default, for new schedules WBS code definition is not set. So, WBS
number will be same as the row number (field: task id) and so, when
the task is moved the WBS is renumbered accordingly.

If the WBS code definition is set, then it overrides the default
behaviour. In your schedule where the WBS code is not renumbered
automatically is because, the code definition is set to "Numbered"
with "Generate WBS code for new task" and "Verify uniqueness for new
WBS codes" selected. So, for every new task WBS code generated that is
unique and doesn't change; when the task is moved the WBS code doesn't
change.

If you want to renumber the WBS code, you can select "Renumber ..."
option via Select Project | WBS.

Please let me know if this solution helps.

That's very helpful, I do have the definition set as you say.

I don't know if I can change it now as I want to keep the overal
numbering system I have as it is tied to my SOV. If I select renumber
I'm concerned it will overhaul the whole numbering system. I'll pla
with a copy of the schedule. Thanks for the feedback. Dou

If any of the WBS codes on the tasks you mentioned have been entered
manually then they stay that way and won't update as you move them around.
You can clear these manual edits and allow updating based on the "sequence"
by selecting the WBS column and selecting Edit-Clear All. Save your file
first in case this is not what you expect...
