What can be done about this?

Hi,

I am using: Microsoft Office Outlook (Microsoft Office Outlook) on Windows XP Service Pack 2 build 2600, and I have the following question:

I have an account on my ISP. yet, when I send a message to anyone outside of that ISP, I get a return message from the server saying the message was not delivered because I was 'trying to relay' which is blocked.

1. What does that mean?
2. What shall I do about it? (outside calling my ISP which charges me for every call and outside of changing ISP which is not an option)

Thanks in advance,

Avi.

if you are properly authenticating to the mail server, then it's a problem
with the configuration of the server and you'll need to call them.

How will I know if I am properly authenticating to the mail server? I entered my username and password in the correct place in the account definition. Anything else I should know?

do you need to authenticate with the outgoing server? from the accounts
dialog, look in More Settings, outgoing server tab.

Are you using your own ISP's server for outgoing mail? For example, if your
ISP is "sausage", you might have "smtp.sausage.net". If you try to use
someone else's SMTP server you'll likely get the message you're seeing, as
they want you to connect to the internet through them if you're going to use
there server.

Alternatively, maybe you're setting the mail account up correctly for your
ISP throughout, but then using a different ISP to connect to the internet?
At work for example?
