What does Field position return exactly?

I tried the XSN form with several different controls in different repeating
sections and repeating tables. But each field is returning the value '1' when
field=>position() function is set for any of the fields.

It's not clear which app or version you're working with in this case. If it's MS Office Infopath you may want to post to that
newsgroup as well (link below) and include details on the steps you're following.
