What is the meaning of the "$" in say the left$ function

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question with regard to the dollar sign at the end of the Left,
right, mid etc type functions.. i do not know what the $ means and am unable
to find/track down what it means ??

Does anyone know when /where it should be used??
The help is unhelpful in this particular case!!

I always assumed it meant a string of characters results from the function.
