what is "use pen as pointer"

There is an icon which has the tooltip "use pen as pointer". But using the
onenote help for this or just 'pointer' provides no clue as to what it is.
Does anybody know?

This button is used when you are in a shared session. If the pen is a
pointer, you can show the other session participants things on the pages,
but you can't add notes.

Think of it in the same way you would a laser pointer or stick - It shows
what you are talking about, but doesn't leave a mark on the page.

This switches the pen to lay down temporary ink - that is, it evaporates
after about 10sec to allow you to circle and indicate things without leaving
permanent marks. Great for use in shared sessions.
