what is Visio

John Marshall, MVP

Visio is a business drawing package that uses the concept of stencils to
create the drawing. Lines connected objects can remain attached when the
objects are moved. The shapes can have intelligence. The drawing can be
interrogated and manipulated by an external program. User's can create their
own shapes and stencils. There are several extras that will create
flowcharts, orgcharts and other charts from various sources of data.

Thanks for the reply. I guess one must have a purpose to
use this tool unlike other products that one can use to
basically tool around with.

Visio is one of those fantastic little apps you never know you need until
you have it. It goes above and beyond the capabilities John touched on; for
instance, since it can open AutoCAD drawings, I am using it to import
engineering "cut sheets" of a client's products since Visio has more
publishing-type features than AutoCAD. I'll then link the Visio drawings to
a Publisher document and the result will be much, much easier to manage and
repurpose than it would had I stayed with AutoCAD.

I've also used it to create really compelling timelines, patent drawings,
house plans and miscellaneous diagrams, and expect to soon begin working on
a project that allows a plumbing contractor to layout plans in Visio that
link to an Access database.

It's one helluva swiss army knife!
