What is Winword.exe?

L

Leonard M. Wapner

Greetings:

Using XP Home with Word 2002. On rare occasions I notice Winword.exe will
run after I've been working on a doc. I sense it is a sign of something not
going well.
What exactly is Windword.exe and what launches it?

Thanks -

Leonard,

What are the indicators that Winword.exe is running other than the fact you
are using Word? I don't know how to say this other than to be to the point,
but for all practical purposes windword.exe is Word. It is the executable
file that launches Word and Word won't run without it.

Here is a demonstration. Close Word, click Start, click Run and type in
winword.exe then press OK. Word starts and you are off to the races.

Perhaps you are observing some sort of resources monitor indication that is
showing winword.exe usage.

Every so often, Word crashes on my computer and closes itself down. If I hit
Ctrl-Alt-Del, I see Winword listed as still running even though Word has
closed. This indicates that at least a part of the Word code is still in
memory. I have found it helpful to highlight the Winword entry and click on
End Task before trying to start Word a second time. This may be what you are
referring to.

Winword.exe is the Word executable. Therefore it *is* Word. If you use Word
as your email editor, it may continue to run if you have Outlook open.
