whats the difference in files (and sizes) between project std 200.

Sudheer

I have installed Project Standard 2003 and Project Professional 2003 on
different machines and noticed that there is no difference in terms of files
(and their sizes) being installed. I would like to know how could one
identify the different editions of Microsoft Project 2003 based on the files
(their sizes or modified date/time).

Hi Sudheer ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I don't think you can as the files should be identical. The Project part is
the same in both versions. Project professional has the add-ons that allow
use with servers etc., whereas the Standard version is a stand alone version
for PCs.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

I've also noticed that over time with updates there seems to be space freed
up within a file that is not released until a Save-As is performed, and then
we end up with a smaller schedule. just using the same version of project.

Yes, that seems to be true - please see the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43.
File Bloat? - Might be Corruption.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response and the link.

Do you know where this add-on functionality for Project Professional comes
from? Are there any additional files that provide this? I just need to find a
file, that changes (size or date/time) or one that is added newly, between
Project Standard and Project Professional editions.

Perhaps you could install both versions, use a tool like CleanSweep to
monitor the complete list of files installed, and Tools like Norton
untilities to compare the files in both installs and see which ones are
different.

It gives one pause to wonder why you need this info. You're not by chance
trying to save money and circumvent the licensing by buying (cheaper)
Project Standard editions and "converting" them into the more expensive
Professional edition by copying the files that differ from a single legal
Pro install over into their program directories are you by any chance?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response.

I did run windiff against both the versions and could not identify any
differences. I am in the process of establishing a procedure to identify
installations of different editions of MS Project using characteristics like
file size, date/time etc. Based on this info, one could identify the
particular edition of project installed on a machine :)

Hi Sudheer,

I'm at loss to see what you're getting at. Project Professional is Project
Standard with a lot of extra programming to allow the data to be used on a
server and in an enterprise mode. The individual project files (*.mpp) are
identical from whatever version they're produced. If you are using servers,
then the Standard version is of little use to you. If you have the same
project on different PCs, they could well be different, but only because
what someone has done to the project and not because of the platform from
which it emanated.

I think he's looking for comparisons among the actual program executables
and dll's rather than the mpp and other data files.

You might poke around in the registry. There is probably something there
which tells the difference. I don't have both installed so I can't tell you
if there is any difference
