Try this:

Start | Run

type "winword /regserver" (without the quotation marks; ensure there's a
space after winword)

This may help Word re-register the *.doc filetype.

Susan,
sorry, no help. Let me try to explain again,
I create a word doc and save it to my desktop. Then when I want to access
it, I click on the icon on the desktop, office word opens, then I have to go
to the open existing doc on the tool bar and the drop down opens and then I
have to locate the file under desktop and click to highlight and hit the open
button, then the file opens????? Why Why Why??

Why not just right-click on the desktop icon for that file and choose
"Open With" to select the program to open the file with.

Are you using Office 2003? If so, may I suggest use Detect & Repair to
resolve the problem and file associations once and for all.

Help, Detect & Repair

Also, it is not a good idea to save file on the desktop as desktop
should be as clean as possible!!!. I don't like clutter on my desktop,
do you?
