When I open other peoples docuemnts it changes my TOC formatting

Is there a way to make my TOC formatting default so that when I open someone
else's document it won't make my computer have several different styles for
the same style?

Are you saying that the TOC entries have inconsistent formatting? If
so, the reason is probably that the creator of the document applied
font formatting (such as bold, italic, font size, font name) directly
to the heading text instead of relying on properly formatted heading
styles. You can clear direct font formatting from headings by
selecting them and pressing Ctrl+SpaceBar, and then update the TOC.

Does that delete the formatting that was on the document from my computer. I
have had the experience that the previous formatting stayed on my computer.
The name (Heading 1) might be the same but have different settings (bold,
font size, etc.)?

You are correct: any font formatting not in style will be removed for
selected paragraphs (in the current document) as you press
Ctrl+SpaceBar. But you can add the desired formatting to the heading

If you want to easily re-use formatting, create a template which has
the style settings you want.
