Where do messages go?

I inadvertently dragged a group of messages and dropped them on the Personal
Folders line of my Outlook. Now I cannot find those messages. They don't
seem to be in any of the folders under Personal Folders.

So when you move messages to Personal Folders, where do they go? Is it
possible to retrieve them?

WHen you drop a folder into your personal folders group they go into
whatever personal folder is located there -- make sure it is expanded.

Once you drop a folder in there you can drag it back out and into your inbox
(or whereever).

Personal Folders are a great way to free up space on your Exchange Server
(or whatever your server system is) and onto your local system. The personal
folder files can also be burned onto DVD or CD for archiving purposes.

If you mean that you dragged the items onto the root node of the message
store (usually labelled "Outlook Today - Personal Folders"), the items won't
display because that is supposed to be a holding folder for the other tree
nodes of various types (e-mail, contact, journal, notes). The view on that
folder won't show mail items because it was defined as an mail-type folder.

Right-click on the root node, Properties, Home Page, and disable using an
HTML page to display in the right-side pane. Maybe that will then let you
see the mail items you dragged into that folder.

into a regular folder, there wouldn't have been nearly the mystery.

I meant to say "that folder won't show mail items because it was NOT defined
as a mail-type folder". It uses the HTML code to display a different view
which is a web-like page. The HTML code can come from a URL, file, or from
an entry point in a DLL file. Because the web page is being displayed, you
don't get to see the items stored within that folder.

In fact, you can define another e-mail folder and then change the Home Page
to point at a web site so, for example, you could create a node called
"Hotmail" (which is NOT an e-mail account defined in Outlook) and change its
Home Page to point at http://www.hotmail.com/. It won't let Outlook yank
e-mails from. Instead it gives you the HTML web page for Hotmail but while
you are within Outlook. This trick lets you browse all your webmail
accounts or other web sites using easy-to-access nodes in the tree rather
than using Favorites.
