where does show/hide get turned on?

I cannot find where show/hide gets turned on so I can see soft carriage
returns, paragraph markers, tabs, etc. It would help to see these
non-printing marks. Built-in help doesn't seem to have it that I can find.

PowerPoint doesn't have these marks.

Do you see this in an embedded object? If so, please try the properity
settings of that object.
