which office software is best for college bound student?

The best Office software for colleges isn't from Microsoft. If you want a
good Office suite, try:

www.openoffice.org

And download the 2.0 version. It is superior than MSOffice, has a robust
text editor and a well-designed substitute to the Access database program.
All of this for free.

If you cannot afford to buy from Microsoft, luckily there is an alternative.

Would teacher/student edition be better than office basic?

If you need all the bells and whistles of Office now, go for
the s/e edition: it's fully equipped. If you need a version
of Office that will qualify for future upgrades... Well I
don't know if Office Basic does qualify, but if it does,
then go for that.

Check out the college's website. Look for computer specifications. Very
often they will tell you what software they recommend. (I used to work for a
major computer manufacturer and this is what I did when a client asked me
that question.)

Office editions differ as to which Office applications are included. Look
for comparisons of Office editions here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Sorry that I cannot be more specific. My internet connections is having
problems tonight.

Office 2003 has the same applications as Office Standard. Hence it does not
include Access.

Microsoft offers Academic versions of each Office edition and for stand
alone versions of Office applications. Check with your Collage book store
for what is available.

Which Office edition you need depends on your course. If you do not need a
database application than you to not need Access. To answer you question,
you first need to define what capability you need.

I would only recommend using a cheap product like open office (or even word
perfect) if you do not want your kid to be used to using the products that
are in like 90% of the real world work places. I am not saying these
products are not decent they are just not really used by business’s they are
more for the person who is either antimicrosoft or looking to get things for
free.
Have your child check with the school they are going to, some schools
actually include office as part of the tuition. If they do not supply it for
free they usually offer a huge discount in the schools bookstore or you could
purchase it from companies that cater to Schools and students, Like Software
Spectrum or CDW just ask them for there academic pricing.
