Whoa Nellie! Strange action in Word 2007

I've imported a Word 2003 .doc into Word 2007, so I'm working in the
Compatibility Mode. If I simply click on Page Layout / Hyphenation /
Hyphenation Options / Manual, and then do nothing but just close the box, the
font formatting of the entire document changes. Fortunately hitting the Undo
button brings things back to normal, but what is going on?
