Why are the slashes in my hyperlink changing? (links stop working)

I put in a hyperlink to a file (a photo) which, of course require the back
slash \. It works the first time when I test it, but later on it won't work.
When I edit the hyperlink I see that PPT changed all the slashes to forward /
like a web address.

Is this something I can control?

Is it a full path to the image or a relative path? Full paths will be the most
reliable.

It is a full path starting with two backslashes and the server name, then
the folder tree ex: \\servername\folder1\folder2\...\filename
If you look at File, Properties, is there anything in the "Hyperlink base"
field? If so, try removing it.

Nope, nothing there.
Finally, what do you want to have happen when clicking on the link? Perhaps
there's another way to get to the same end.

This particular slide has a list of items and a few of them I would like to
pop up a related photo to provide a visual. There isn't enough room to put
the list and the photos, plus the photos are only needed momentarily and
would be a distraction if they stayed there; it's the list that's important.

Thanks,
Chris

Hmm.

Walk me through the step by step process you use to create these links and let me
know what version of PPT you're using. I'll see if I can repro this here.

If you have a smallish (sub 2-5mb) sample presentation you can share, I'd be happy
to take a look at that too. email to steve at-sign pptools dot com

I'm using PPT 2002 SP3 on XP professional. I tried it two different ways.
After typing the text that I wanted to click on, I highlighted the text,
right clicked and selected *hyperlink*. For the first method, I copy/pasted
the path and filename manually. For the second method, I browsed to the photo
and let PPT put the link in.
