Why can't I see embedded pictures in Word 2003?

Since I installed Word 2003 I am no longer able to see embedded pictures or
images unless I go to print preview. All I see is a blank square plus the
grab handles. Is there some setting that I need to adjust to see embedded
images and pictures while I am in Normal view?

A few things to try:
1. In Word, if you're working in Normal view, switch to Print
Layout view (View | Print Layout), because objects that are
formatted as "float over text" (Word 97) or as something other
than "inline with text" (Word 2002 and 2003) are not visible in
Normal view.
2. In Word, click on Tools | Options | View tab | check the
"Drawings" box and uncheck the "Picture placeholders" box | Print
tab | check the "Drawing objects" box | OK.
3. If neither of the previous suggestions fixes the problem,
then try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start |
Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting.
If this fixes the problem, then you might want to check the
website of the manufacturer of your video card/graphics adapter
to see if there is an updated driver available.

I have the same problem and can't solve it. I am running Office 2003 on
three different computers and I CAN see pictures on two of them but not on my
laptop. I am using the same document on all computers. I can see the
picture in print preview, but not in the regular window. Any solutions come
your way?
Thanks

OK guys, after hunting myself silly, I found the solution. If you can see the
graphic in print preview, but not in the regular view, go to Tools, Options,
and make sure that Picture Placeholders is NOT selected. Make sure that
drawings is selected. Seems to be a bug in Word 2003. I have spent HOURS
trying to find the solution. Thanks to Genie who addressed this issue under
"Hidden Clipart" I have the soloution.

OK OK....Picture Placeholders is NOT selected, Drawings IS selected, but I
still have the same problem. I have to see the pictures in the normal "edit"
mode because I am updating a document with new images. This wasn't a problem
in Word XP. Intensely frsutrating.

I also have been having the same trouble. I have checked all kinds of
options and still the problem exists some times. I have plenty of memory and
I can see the pictures in print preview. It does it on a few different
machines.

I found that one way to get it to work is to open the thumbnails view (View
- Thumbnails). When I scroll down to a page that has a picture that I cannot
see, I click on that page in the thumbnails section and the picture appears
in the Normal view. Thumbnails takes up a little more real estate on the
screen, but it seems to work.
