Why do I get a black background when scanning in m/soft office?

When I scan a dodument using Microsoft Office Document Scanning and I come to
print I get a black background that fills the page round the item I have
scanned. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Adjust the Scan area to include only the area the paper occupies instead
of the entire scanner head.
