Well, what have you come up with so far? Maybe, if you share what you
already have, someone will be happy to add to it.

I'm not sure whether I understand your question correctly. Are you comparing
PowerPoint to other presentation software? Or do you want to know why and
what people present?

Bert,
I have to write a report about why presentation packages are used!
To communicate something to an audience.
It's better than standing up to speak to an audience to communicate something complex with no visual aids/speaker
support.
can you peeps tell me why u use powerpoint?
It may or may not be the best out there, but you know that it's likely to be installed on most PCs.
You can safely email or give someone a powerpoint file and know they can view it one way or another just like you can
with Excel and MS Word.

Two scholars that might have something to contribute to your report are
Richard E. Mayer and Edward Tufte. Dr. Mayer is a professor of
psychology, he describes ways that PowerPoint can be used to improve the
audience's understanding of presented material. Dr. Tufte is a professor
with expertise in graphical design (his design for bus schedules is
brilliant--I'm not kidding), and he has written material that is critical
of PowerPoint, claiming that it generally inhibits understanding of
presented material.

If you can synthesize the work of these two scholars to form coherent
arguments for and against the use of PowerPoint and outline ways that it
can be used effectively, I think your teachers will be most impressed
with your scholarship.

Another line of thought that might inform your work is field of learning
styles. There is a good summary of this topic at:

http://www.learnativity.com/learningstyles.html

I'll leave it as an exercise for you as to how to integrate this
information with the other PowerPoint-specific information.

I hope you'll post a copy of your final paper here when you have
completed it so we can all learn from it. Thanks.

1. Because everyone else in the company knows how to use it, so we can share
slides and graphics easily.
2. Because the user interface is a standard type and I can work out how to
use it without reading the manual.
3. Because I can paste loads of stuff in from all sorts of places without
too much hassle and it's compatible with most other applications.
4. It's got lots of users so holes in the feature list and other issues tend
to get addressed over time.

I use PPT because PPT is my life :)

I have seen PPT used fro everything from classes to informational meetings,
for church services to bible studies, for family reunions to portfolios, for
resumes to reports. People use it to communicate information, both with
words and graphics. It can be used as a stand alone presentation or as a
stand up and talk presentation.

If you really want to know what all people use it for, check out my book
"Kathy Jacobs on PowerPoint". It is based around a series of case studies of
how people use PPT and how they can use each piece of it better.

Bert,
I'm guessing that you're a freshman in high school - maybe because of your
spelling. In that case some of the references given might be a bit
heavy-going.
My suggestion is - just copy these comments into PowerPoint, with one
comment
per slide. Just make sure that you format them neatly.
Then print out the slides as a handout and turn that into your teacher.
E-mail her a copy of the presentation.

Guys,
I think the question was asked to get a few bullet points about why you use
PowerPoint rather than to get links to books and websites. This shows that
the student has actively gathered results instead of just checking available
references. If the question was asked by a high school student, then he/she
can probably use search engines at least as well as we can if not better.

I am a math teacher of middle school and I have my lessons on PowerPoint to
add interest to the kids to compete in a world of computer games, etc.
I post the lessons on a web page for them to review for tests or if they are
absent, they can view the lessons. It sure beats the lessons on a
blackboard!

I figured that Bert was either seriously trying to get some information,
or he was looking for an easy way to get someone else to do his homework
for him. I chose to treat him seriously, knowing that my answers might
not be what he wants. If he is truly serious, and my (and others')
answers aren't sufficient, he is welcome to clarify his question, and I
(and others) will be happy to help him. If he was just looking for easy
answers to his homework, I have no interest in wasting my time providing
that.

Very interesting topic. I see that by now you have received quite a few
responses. Some to your use and others... well not so usefull.
I use presentation packages because they make me look smart. The world
we live in is growing by leaps and bounds in the techno areas.
With a presentation program I can do so much more than I can with a
simple overhead slide. I can animate, move from topic to topic without
delay, and all with little more effort than it takes to create a
overhead slide.
I use Powerpoint because that is the program my employer bought for my
use. As a result, I am no longer as proficient in other presentation
programs such as the ones from Harvard and Lotus. In early iterations of
of presentation programs there was not a big difference in features and
ease of use. The benefit of PP over the others was only in the fact that
it came with Office and had the muscle of MS behind it. Today however, I
can not say as to why PP has such a large following. I have not used the
other programs for quite a few years and my copies of them are quite a
few versions behind the times and PP.
Good luck on your report.
