WHY DOES A WORD DOCUMENT OPEN WITH INTERNET EXPLORER

I have many Word documents and occasionally one will insist on launching
internet explorer when double clicked. I have checked the file extension
association and they have all been associated with Word yet IE6 opens the
document.
