Why Does It Take 8 CRs For Page to Complete?

S

StarView

I have to hit enter 8 to 10 times for my web page to complete. Used Personal Web Site design)
#1: type url into browser address line - home page comes up blank
#2: highlight address in address line, hit enter, see: "<! - - mstheme - - "
#3: Home page content comes up but not the bluecalm theme background or font
(buttons though come up with the right theme)
#4 thu 8 or 10: Takes that many more "enters" for page to complete
Click on "About me": page cannot be displayed; unavailable
Click on back then click on Favorites: blank
Click on back then click on Photgallery: blank
Click on back then click on Feedbac: blank
Click on back then click on About Me again: - comes up correct
Click on back then click on Interests: blank
Click on back than click on Interests again: comes up correct
Any ideas what's causing this & how to fix it?
I'm running WinXP Pro; IIS - with latest updates & ZoneAlarm turned off on serving machine & external machine trying to access the web site.

Sounds like your page has some broken html
- a missing " or > just before one of your theme tags

Provide a URL for us to look at if you can't find it

The URL is http://www.remotedirector.com. You may need to hit enter several times for the page to complete. If not try back in a few min. as I may have temporarily paused or stopped IIS in an effort to troubleshoot. Thank you for taking a look at this.

That's my point. When I access it, I have to highlight the URL in the browerser's address line and hit enter - doing this eight to ten times before the page comes up in completion. It's really confounding me as to what's causing this. If you could try doing what I describe above - eight to ten times, see if you eventually get the page.

Thanks.

That's my point. To get the page to appear, I have to highlight the URL in the browser's address field eight to ten times for the page to finally come up correctly. It's really confounding me as to what's causing this. It started two to three months ago. It had been working fine prior to then. The only changes that I can think of are updates from Microsoft that they publish. I've reformatted my PC, reloaded S/W & installed "typical" IIS & FP and I still get this new problem. If you could try the same highligh & enter 8 to 10 times as described above, that'd be appreciated. I don't know if it is IIS that's the problem or the site as designed by FP (For reference, another home automation browser I have configured for a different port comes up fine. Its web server is embedded in the home control application & does not use IIS or FP.)

Thanks.

You have some big problems...first the site is wide open...check the message I placed on YOUR index page - nothing malicious mind you...I was just poking around.

There are some structural problems too...you have image files all over the place that probably belong only in the themes folder.

Good Lord!

Good catch, Crash! This guy has some bad problems. Mostly, apparently,
because of his incompetent host!!!

Maybe the security issue is also what's causing his other problem? Because
somebody has gone into the site and place some malicious script somewhere?

Yah...weird huh.

Don't think its malicious script, I think he had images all over the place and css files scattered about. While I was in there I have a feelling he was too, because when I came out the css seemed to take effect...I think Star was fixing things. I didn't do anything except add my little note on the index page. Maybe some of the derived stuff was floating around as well.

Boy that's bad huh!

I think it's locked down now, but Star hasn't removed my msg though.

I probably shouldn't have posted this in the open, but didn't think of it till after I pushed the send button.

Hi Gents,

Thank you for your notes. I do appreciate the help. I'm running IIS on one of my own PCs, not relying on my ISP, to enable access to video cams (once I complete fixing this darn system). So, in terms of an incompetant host, I do not take offence, as I am somewhat fumbling around trying to figure this out. For troubleshooting, I'm eliminating variables - in this case my ZoneAlarm firewall - it has been off. I've restarted it. Let me know if you are still able to modify any of the pages now. As for malicious code, that's crossed my mind but since I've reformatted the dang HD, reloaded the OS & all the programs, if there was such code, it should have not returned. Yet I'm getting the same problem now as I was prior to reformatting. The routings in the Linksys router seem fine. Other application-embedded servers aseem to be properly routed. It's this IIS & FP solution that is problematic. BTW, the images that appear all over are the standard set up with using the wizard in FP to create a personal website. In any case, if you look at my initial call for help at the beginning of this thread, any direction you could offer as to how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. John.

Hi Crash - Wheh, I'm having a tough time today. Yes, I enabled the ZoneAlarm firewall (ZA) & that's why you experienced it as locked-down. I turned off ZA, re-published the original file, & turned ZA back on. BUT - now I can't get to the website w/the firewall on. Would you know what I need to allow in the firewall so I'm protected yet it is accessible? (I have it turned off for a little bit.)

Thanks

Don't think its malicious script, I think he had images all over the place and css files scattered about. While I was in there I have a feelling he was too, because when I came out the css seemed to take effect...I think Star was fixing things. I didn't do anything except add my little note on the index page. Maybe some of the derived stuff was floating around as well.

Boy that's bad huh!

I think it's locked down now, but Star hasn't removed my msg though.

I probably shouldn't have posted this in the open, but didn't think of it till after I pushed the send button.

In my reply above this, I remark that I can't get to IIS w/ZA enabled. Well, after looking at forums at ZoneAlarm, turns out their ver. 5.0 has problems w/IIS. The short-term fix is to roll back to an earlier version or try a beta fix that will be officially released in mid-July. I'll try rolling back & hopefully I won't have to reformat & reload the whole system again because of some hidden files or hard-to-find registry entries. Still, any advice or recommendations as to what else may be causing my original problem woulde heplful. Thanks, John.

Please post the web address - it is difficult to answer the question if we can't

You need to first of all set permissions to stop any person from accessing
your web and changing anything. Suggest you head into an IIS newsgroup
right now. But, for the time being, do not allow access to your computer
from outside traffic until you get it fixed.

| Hi Gents,
|
| Thank you for your notes. I do appreciate the help. I'm running IIS on
one of my own PCs, not relying on my ISP, to enable access to video cams
(once I complete fixing this darn system). So, in terms of an incompetant
host, I do not take offence, as I am somewhat fumbling around trying to
figure this out. For troubleshooting, I'm eliminating variables - in this
case my ZoneAlarm firewall - it has been off. I've restarted it. Let me
know if you are still able to modify any of the pages now. As for malicious
code, that's crossed my mind but since I've reformatted the dang HD,
reloaded the OS & all the programs, if there was such code, it should have
not returned. Yet I'm getting the same problem now as I was prior to
reformatting. The routings in the Linksys router seem fine. Other
application-embedded servers aseem to be properly routed. It's this IIS &
FP solution that is problematic. BTW, the images that appear all over are
the standard set up with using the wizard in FP to create a personal
website. In any case, if you look at my initial call for help at the
beginning of this thread, any direction you could offer as to how to fix
this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. John.

I get nothing but a "page not found" error.

The URL is http://www.remotedirector.com. You may need to hit enter several

Tom,

I think I fixed it! Please try accessing my site http://www.remotedirector.com to see if 1st you can access it, and 2nd if you can change anything & save it . I think the original problem was the firewall. Turns out the ZoneAlarm firewall does not support IIS. It is meant to be just for clients, not servers. Secondly, I uninstalled it. I was immediately able to access the site correctly. Then, I installed an earlier version of ZA, per recommendations at the ZA site. I was unable to access my site from the outside. What I did was configure ZA to ask for permission on any new requests. Then I accessed each tab in the properties for "default web site" in IIS. ZA asked for permission - I allowed it. Now I'm able to access my site from the outside and it appears to function correctly. Now, if you could try accessing it and try to change something, that'd be great. Please post what happens. Thank you!

Hi Andrew - I posted the URL in one of the replies above . . . http://www.remotedirector.com. See my reply to Tom just above your message. I think I found the problem and the fix. This is/was (I hope) an interesting case. John.

Crash - I think I found the problem and the fix. See my reply to Tom's message below. Even though I had turned off the ZA firewall to troubleshoot, it apparently was still able to cause problems. Try my site to see if you can access it & change it. Thank you! http://www.remotedirector.com. John.

| Good Lord!
|
| Good catch, Crash! This guy has some bad problems. Mostly, apparently,
| because of his incompetent host!!!
|
| Maybe the security issue is also what's causing his other problem? Because
| somebody has gone into the site and place some malicious script somewhere?

| You have some big problems...first the site is wide open...check the message

|
| There are some structural problems too...you have image files all over the

|
| | | That's my point. To get the page to appear, I have to highlight the URL
| in the browser's address field eight to ten times for the page to finally
| come up correctly. It's really confounding me as to what's causing this.
| It started two to three months ago. It had been working fine prior to then.
| The only changes that I can think of are updates from Microsoft that they
| publish. I've reformatted my PC, reloaded S/W & installed "typical" IIS &
| FP and I still get this new problem. If you could try the same highligh &
| enter 8 to 10 times as described above, that'd be appreciated. I don't know
| if it is IIS that's the problem or the site as designed by FP (For
| reference, another home automation browser I have configured for a different

| application & does not use IIS or FP.)
| |
| | Thanks.

I can't get in....but I'm no expert and I have a feelling you shouldn't rely on Zone Alarm to protect you if you're running your own server.

|
Thank you!
