Why does Microsoft Word XP freeze when trying to open a stored fil

My OS is Windows XP and I have Office XP installed.

When I attempt to open a stored file in Word XP the computer freezes.

Any help to eliminate this irritating problem will be appreciated.

If you have any mapped network drives that are not currently available,
disconnect them in My Computer.

Is the Word file stored on a network drive, your local hard drive, a
floppy disk, a CD, or what? Do you have this problem with one
particular Word file, or all Word files?

I have a stand-alone computer (no networks) and the Word file is stored on my
hard disk.

This problem is intermittent and it is with all Word files. When it freezes
I have to close out Word, restart my computer and that usually corrects the
problem - until the next time it decides to freeze.
