Why does Word 2002 SP3 often close prematurely?

When I have multiple Word 2002 SP3 files open in Windows XP SP 2, Word often
closes when I click on the task bar to switch (Word) documents. I'm wasting a
lot of time re-opening and re-checking documents.

Is this a known glitch with these versions of Word and XP?
