Why has my delete key stopped working in Word 2003?

The delete key suddenly stopped working on highlighted words (but functions
if you enter 'Y' after it). In Notepad it works OK. Any ideas out there?

In Tools > Options > General, uncheck both options that mention
WordPerfect.
