Why would all the Connector icons in AutoShapes be unavailable?

Other shapes such as Lines, Basic Shapes, etc. can be selected. It is only
the Connector shapes that are grayed-out.

To use connectors in Word 2002 and 2003, you have to use a drawing canvas.
If you have disabled the drawing canvas on the General tab of Tools |
Options (which it would appear that you have), use Insert | Picture | New
Drawing. You should be able to drag or copy/paste the AutoShapes you've
already created into the canvas.
