will attachments from windows ME open with windows XP Home?

I can't open my documents, now that I've gotten a new computer. I have
several wordpads, that I saved in my hotmail account. Now, when I try and
open them, I get a message "can not load Word for Windows 6.0 files".

HELP!!!!!!!!!!
