windows could not start-corrupt file

hi, turned on pc and got this:windows could not start because the following
file is missing \windows\system32\config\system it then goes on to say i
can repair the file by installing the original set up cd-rom, however i
cannot find it! i did try putting nortons go back cd in but still nothing,
although i dont really want to do this unless i really have to. I then found
some info about repairing corrupt files which told me to hold down f8where it
gave me a menu of options...and that is where i completely lost it! does
anyone know if this can be fixed or is this the end for me and my pc? i did
read that i can buy a repair cd but need some adviceas to whether this will
work
many thanks
