Windows Installer patch package

I had memory problems with Windows 98, tried re-
installing, but this didn't work.. I tried again, and
this time it worked, but there was large damage to the
registry. I upgraded to Windows XP, and I cannot install
Office XP. The message I get is as follows: "This patch
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch
package exists and that you can access it, or contact the
application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package." I am sure this is due to
damage to the registry, so I would be extremely grateful
for any ideas on what I need to do.
