Windows ME

I am attempting to install office professional edition 2003 on Windows ME.
It doesn't work. Can I upgrade from or convert from ME to XP??

Granny,

You should *always* read the system requirements before you buy software.
Office 2003 will NOT run on Windows ME. You will have to pay another ~$100
to upgrade to Windows XP Home. (I never did like Win ME so I think it's a
well spent $100.)

Wal-Mart.com has an full OEM version available (with a mouse) for $120. I'd
recommend that. Back up your important files and flatten that system. If you
don't know how, pay someone to do it for you. Dumping one version on top of
another often causes grief to the owner.

and I will try to upgrade because this ME system has had problems with other
programs and AOL9 will not run on it...

Timothy, thanks. See my response to JoAnn. I had checked out most of these
sites when I ran into trouble and am considering getting another computer
(mine is HP and it is 5 years old) and my son, Tim, says get Apple. So, I
will either spend the money to upgrade this one to XP or discover how to run
Quickbooks Pro on Mac.

These are great sites and I am saving this valuable information!!

I see you're another idiot who cannot read what's written in plain English on
the side of a box... It *lists* the system requirements - do you see Windows
ME listed there, because I don't...

What do you think happened - MS just forgot to mention it?! You could also
have saved yourself much time, hassle and expense had you bothered to STFW
before purchase. But idiots like you never bother to do anything sensible...

Where have you been living the past 5 years?! You thought an OS released in
1999/2000 was*LATER* than one released in 2001?! You didn't wonder why all
the hype about XP happened *after* you bought your computer running ME...?

Ah, I see you're an AOHELL luser - *that* would explain everything...

Er, QBP won't run on a Mac - it's PC only; Inuit never released it for the
Macintosh. You cannot run Windows software on a Mac, unless you spend £500 or
so on Virtual PC and, running anything using that, isn't a pleasant
experience.

If you need Mac accounting software, you'll just have to buy Mac accounting
software....

MYOB for Mac is £350...

No need call anyone an idiot. Simple thing to do. Is send it back
to microsoft for a refund. Tell them you can't use on your system.
They will refund your money if it been less the 30 days. You will
have to wait a while on your refund check.

I do recommend changing isp. Aol blocks a lot of email that is not
spam. I use familyonline. It $13.95 an month (Except for one place
in Illinois to do higher phone cost). You get an optional program
called fastlane, plus you get up to 5 free emails. You can check it
on the web or using a email program. No contact. You can pay cash
at a family video store or you can use a credit or debit card and have
it withdrawn automatically. No newsgroups. You can still you news
server like news.microsoft.com and others. They have not blocked
port 119-yet. I hope they never do.

I'm not 100% positive on some of the other versions in between, but here is
the release order (oldest first):

Microsoft Windows 1.0
Microsoft Windows 2.0
Microsoft Windows 3.0
Microsoft Windows 3.11
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 95a
Microsoft Windows 95b
Microsoft Windows 95c
Microsoft Windows 98 (version 4.10.1998)
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (version 4.10.2222)
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME)
Microsoft Windows 2000 (Windows NT 5.0)
Microsoft Windows XP (Windows NT 5.1)
Microsoft Windows 2003
Microsoft Windows Vista (formerly Windows code name "Longhorn")

Note:
x = any number

If you've ever heard of "Windows Longhorn", it is now officially called
"Windows Vista". Windows Vista is the latest Windows operating system due
out in the year 2006.

If you are having problems with ME and are going to upgrade to XP, I
would recommend that you take the painful step of doing a full install
of XP after backing up your data instead of upgrading ME. Upgrading
ME often seems to bring the problems along with it.

MS don't do refunds for stupidity....

WTF are you recommending I change my ISP?! You know nothing about my ISP!
Why would I change from an ISP I'm perfectly happy with to one that installs
a virus on my system?! Why would I want viruses on my computer? That's what
AOHELL is, you know, a *VIRUS* - or, more accurately, a Trojan.

Or were you responding to the OP? If that's the case, I suggest you learn how
to post....

A Trojan: -

Masquerades as a benign application. Just like AOHELL

One type claims to rid your system of viruses, but instead lets them in. Just
like AOHELL. Don't be fooled by AOHELL's AVP and firewall - they're useless.

Is nigh on impossible to remove without reformatting. Just like AOHELL (in
fact, most Trojans are easier to remove than AOHELL).

You may be happy using AOHELL's trojanic software. I, OTOH, value my computer
(why would I want to deliberately infect something I paid £2,500 for?!)

I suggested the same thing. Dumping one OS on top of another often causes
more hassles than what anyone deserves. (Except for my ex.)

As far as I've experienced(I've been using rather old version, through) WinE
(I believe that's the form to be written) requires somewhat higher level of
computing skills and is not something good for dummies.
